Competa, dating back to the Moors, and whose style is reflected in its winding streets and white-washed houses, has many excellent restaurants and bars. El Pilon, owned by English chef Christian and his Spanish wife Mari Lou, one of the best restaurants in the village.
Excellent meat, fresh fish and vegetables.
El Cortijo del Paco,
another excellent restaurant owned by Spanish chef Paco, on a par with el Pilon with excellent steaks, fish and rabo de torro - oxtail, and if you like fillet steak, try the Tornedo Rossini.
There are two banks in the village and a cash machine, with several small supermarkets. A modern shopping mall is located in Velez Malaga with a huge Eroski Supermarket, Dunnes Dept Store as well as fashion shops, cinemas and a food court.
Horse riding is available at Los Caballos Mosquin.
There is a wealth of walking opportunities at all levels. The terrain ranges from fertile river valleys, relatively gentle lower hills, to the rugged high sierra up to 7,000 feet.
