Description: The White House, built in 1843, is in Rasquera, an old Catalan village near the River Ebro, about 25 kilometres inland from the unspoilt southern Costa Daurada. There are two small single bedrooms, a double bedroom, a kitchen-dining room, a lounge and a bathroom. There is a terrace on the roof, with sunbeds and chairs but, sadly, views only of the house opposite. Although the house has been renovated and modernised, please remember that this is an old village house and not a "penthouse apartment" in a tourist resort. Rasquera is a typical Catalan farming village, with a maze of narrow streets, alleys, stone steps and archways in the Old Quarter, where the house is situated. There a few shops, a bank, a pharmacy, several patisseries ( the local speciality,) a restaurant, three bars and two cafes. There is a fine modern public swimming-pool, but this is only open in July and August. There are fiestas in early May and early August. |

The lower region of the Ebro, Spain's longest river, enjoys wonderfully varied scenery.
The river, 200 metres wide, cuts through the mountains, forming cliffs, as at Miravet ( 4 kms from Rasquera ) which has a cliff-top Templar castle. The Ebro is noted for fishing, especially for record-breaking catfish.
The Ebro Delta ( 30 kms ) is a birdwatcher's paradise, with a huge system of hides.
The coastal towns - L'Ametlla de Mar, L'Ampolla, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant ( all about 30 kms ) are largely undeveloped and quiet, except on Sundays, the family day out.
Inland, there are several small mountain ranges, including the Serra de Cardo, behind Rasquera, whose tranquil peak features an old ruined spa hotel.
Near Gandesa ( 20 kms ) is Corbera d'Ebre, a village that was destroyed in the decisive Battle of the Ebro at the end of the Spanish Civil War, 70 years ago, and left untouched as a memorial of the war. A visit is very moving.
Bodegas can be visited in the nearby wine-growing areas of Terra Alta, around Gandesa, and the highky-rated ( and expensive ) Priorat, near Falset.
